Children's Program
To promote one of the most powerful longer-term solutions to homelessness—breaking the generational cycle of dependency.
We serve more than 250 homeless children, from newborns to 18-year-olds every year. These children reside in our shelter and transitional housing units with their mothers, who are taking the brave and determined steps towards self-sufficiency. Our children know first-hand the obstacles and dangers that come with chronic poverty, such as victimization, instability, inconsistent friendships, low self-esteem and poor academic performance. Kids Having FunOur Children’s Program provides on-site activities almost daily. It is one of the most powerful tools we provide families. Children who participate in the program experience themselves and their peers independent of their disadvantaged home lives. The knowledge that they are more than just “homeless kids” is a positive influence that can stay with them for life. In addition, children experience:
  • Increase in academic achievement
  • Developed skills in literacy
  • Strengthened coping skills
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Gain in social skills
  • Access to tutoring & homework help
Specific activities address different needs:
  • “Reading buddies” and “Leap for Literacy” offer a bridge to addressing any learning deficiencies. Children who request help with their homework will always find someone willing to help.
  • Field trips and other directed recreational activities such as martial arts and pet therapy allow for emotional adjustments (e.g. anger management) while providing positive role models.
  • Age specific programs include Teen Night, which benefits kids who are at least 11 years of age. Activities are held every Friday in the late afternoon or evening and are carefully planned by staff as well as the teens themselves.
  • Themes are selected every month (e.g. space, Australia, the five senses, etc.) to provide a variety of educational and fun activities. Theme-driven activities include field trips, arts & crafts, movies and more.
